“The people spoke against God, Wherefore have you brought us up out of Egypt to die in the wilderness?”
In other words, “Why have you given us this life, just for us to be miserable and die?”
“And the LORD sent fiery serpents among the people, and they bit the people; and much people died.
They came to Moses, and said, We have sinned, for we have spoken against the LORD, ask the LORD, that he will take away these serpents from us. And the LORD said unto Moses, Make a fiery serpent, and set it upon a pole: and it shall so happen, that every one that is bitten, when he looks upon it, shall live. . . and it so happened, that if a serpent had bitten any man, when he looked upon the serpent of brass, that he lived.” (Adapted from Number 21:5-9)
Those that fought the snakes and tried to kill them all died. By not looking to the brass serpent, it was sure death, it was suicide. Yet, it was totally contrary to human nature, which is, “Watch where the snakes go. Don’t look elsewhere. Kill them and save yourself. Have confidence in yourself.”
These snakes come now in a different forms; anxiety, addictions, perversions, depression, self-harm, paranoia, suicidal tendencies, hypertension and other mental health problems, etc., and they are striking and biting many of us.
We die spiritually at a young age, as the joy of life leaves us through these snake bites and we are imprisoned in a coffin of fears. Another case of, died in youth and got buried at sixty. It is impossible to fight or kill these poisonous snakes by ourselves. Sheer willpower won’t do it, and although the medical profession might give temporary relief, it won’t cleanse the poison. It means sure death, unless we look up to the brass serpent we are doomed to a dead end, just like those many who died in the wilderness.
How many will die because they refuse to look up?
You might say, “Well, we don’t have that brass snake anymore, now do we? Cause that would make it easy.”
It would, wouldn’t it? Listen here to what Jesus says,
“As Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, even so must I be lifted up: so that whoever believes in me will not perish, but have eternal life.” (John 3:14,15)
Can you imagine that, by looking up to Jesus, your snake bites will heal, the poison will be drained from your soul, mind and body, because you have found the healing balm of truth and life. While everyone around you is in distress not knowing where, or whom to turn to, in order to find healing for their mental health problems.
Jesus was lifted up on that cross, just like that brass snake in the wilderness. He was centre stage of all the religious, venomous, poisonous hate and filth that his snake-like enemies could possibly spew at him. While hanging there he carried all the poison of these serpents for us, so that we are no longer hopelessly powerless against these snakes trying to sink their teeth into us, because Jesus destroyed their influence.
When you look up to Jesus and read the healing truths of his words and the profound wisdom put into such simple language, consequently these snakes will just shrivel up and lose their power over you. They’ll fall to the ground as you study his non-conventional, non-religious, politically incorrect, yet heartwarming, healing and challenging, colourful life of love.
The worry and anxiety will have to leave you. Your mind will no longer be subject to fears, but it will be replaced with a loving, powerful and clear thinking mind.
So we either look down at ourselves and our problems and die, or we determine to look up and live. As we ‘Study his life‘, we ‘Steady our life‘.
